Jennifer Clarke: Sonoran Desert Living

Born in the UK. Graduated from Goldsmiths College School of Art, London, in sculpture and printmaking. Moved to Denmark and worked for forty years as a conservator of decorative arts. Jennifer returned to printmaking in the mid-90s attending workshops to learn about non-toxic printmaking. Twelve years ago she discovered mezzotint which has become her main medium. She has exhibited her mezzotints in juried shows nationally and internationally, winning several awards for best in show (including Ink Only V last year in Birmingham) and purchase awards. In 2016 she moved permanently to the US and in 2020 became an American citizen.

“Mezzotint’s sculptural quality continues to challenge my abilities to create light and form, a third dimension out of a two dimensional space. My home is in the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona. I have spent hours drawing in the desert where plant life allures and repels as everything is adorned with spines and hooks. It is this contradictory beauty, that’s both guarded and repelling yet fragile and beckoning, that I so try to capture in my mezzotints.”

The opening reception was held Thursday, June 4th, 2026, from 6 pm to 8 pm at PaperWorkers Local, 2717 Seventh Avenue South, Suite 203, Birmingham, Alabama 35233. Following the opening, the exhibition can be seen during our regular gallery hours on Saturdays from noon to 4 pm. The show closed on Saturday, July 11th, 2026.
