Lindsay Schmittle's Printed Walk
The Printed Walk is a series of letterpress-printed visual interpretations of Lindsay's experience thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2017. Individual prints represent a special moment experienced during each 100-mile stretch of the 2,190-mile trail.
In addition to traditional printing materials, for this series Lindsay has worked with found natural materials such as fallen birch bark collected in the northeast to print for those correlating designs. She also collected pigments from the trail, such as charcoal from wildfires, mica and clay, to crush and mix with transparent white ink for a natural ink colorant in various prints. This experimental printing pursuit allowed Schmittle's hike to feel like a playful scavenger hunt as well as a practice in mindfulness - a long walking meditation focused on being present and simply observing the world around her. The Printed Walk is a celebration of the beauty of nature discovered through mindful observation.
Lindsay Schmittle's Printed Walk opens Thursday, April 5 from 5:00 - 8:00pm at 2717 Seventh Ave South.
